Race / Course Info Beacons

Posted by Atashi at 2015.10.11 10.15 in News

New around the Hydrodrome, are a number of beacon lights. These are mounted on the concrete bollards, or floating on simple metal can-style buoys.

Race Beacon

These beacon lights blink in different colours to provide information on the race or the track status. Each colour has a different meaning.

Hopefully this will help convey information to the drivers while they are out on the course.

  • Cyan / light blue means the track is open and clear, and in Timing Mode.
  • Magenta means the Open Qualifying round is now in session.
  • Red means that we are preparing to race.
  • Green means that an official race is currently in progress.
  • White signals the checkered flag, meaning the race has been won and any drivers still on the course are now on their last lap.
  • Amber indicates that there is wreckage on the course and drivers should proceed with caution.

The reasoning behind these beacon lights is that drivers aren’t always able to see everything happening in chat, so may not realize when qualifications start, or that there is a damaged boat somewhere on the track.

Hopefully folks will get used to the beacon colours. If not, it’s at least another indication that something has changed and they should pay attention.

Belated Course Update Map

This is about 3 weeks late, but here it is – the map for the start of our Sixth series!

Map 150913

There are two key changes to the course – first, we have removed the old gates with their poles and advertising banners. This means that gates 1, 2, 3, and 4 are now much wider than before, and it’s almost impossible to ‘miss’ a gate.

Second, there is a new floating hazard on the course. A blue shipping container is bobbing in the water between gates 3 and 4. This container bobbs up and down and rotates slowly. You can pass it to the left or to the right.

As the container is constantly moving, the best racing line can vary from lap to lap. Whatever you do, don’t run into it! It’s made of steel and it is a real shipping hazard.

Course Updated Again

After a few weeks with the complicated twisty course, we’re going back to a simpler layout for now.

The pit lanes will remain where they are however; this is a more or less permanent change.

This is a faster track, so I expect to see the lap times on the Fastest Lap board will have a couple seconds shaved off of them as people get accustomed to the new track.

Big Course Change

Posted by Atashi at 2015.06.06 16.01 in Hydrodrome

I’ve been working on this for a long time, and here it finally is!┬áThe course has just had some major changes imposed upon it.

The biggest new thing is that the Pit Lane is no longer where it used to be. The area formerly known as the pit lane is now more of a drivers’ prep area – a place to rez your boat before the race, and to park your boat after the race. It is not part of the race line at any time, and does not contain any of the gates or start/finish line.

The new Pit Lane is out by gate 2, instead of being by the start/finish line. It is also inside the course instead of outside the course.

And finally, the course is a lot twistier than it has been lately. This may favour Manoever mode more than Speed mode. There are still some straightaways, but they are shorter and have more abrupt turns at the ends of them.

Finally, the top ten Fastest Lap times have been removed as this new course is slower than the old one. So you get to push for a new fastest lap again!
