Season Seven Changes

Posted by Atashi at 2016.01.04 17.47 in News, Racing

Just a heads-up on some changes we are making for our seventh series.

First, we’re not going to do the qualifications round any more, and we’re not going to use the starting gates any more.

The idea behind the starting gates, was to try and avoid the ‘first turn pile-up’ when all the boats try and squeeze through the first turn or gate at once and inevitably end up in a big crash.

We still had the big pile-ups even using starting gates, so they did not solve the problem they were meant to. And without starting gates, there’s no need for qualifications.

Second, rather than 6 or 8 separate races, we’re cutting it down to just three races.

The first two will be shorter, being 5 to 10 laps. The third race will be a longer one, between 20 and 40 laps.

And finally, the points allocations will be adjusted slightly to account for the difference between long- and short- races. The short races will maintain our 4-3-2-1 points breakdown, but the long race will earn double points, eg. 8-6-4-2 points.

There will be two additional points awarded to the winner of the gold medallion for each race. In the event of a tie in the points after the three races are over, a tie-breaking race will be run and the winner of that race will get the extra 2 points and the medallion.

The Official Rules have been updated accordingly to reflect these changes.

Series Six Concluded

With the 20th regatta yesterday, our sixth season has come to a close.

I think it was a fairly successful season, we had a few new faces join us for a couple races, and one new driver join us for all the races – Ilaria not only made it to all 20 regattas, but also took 3rd place overall in the points!

Second place went to Sandi Omlet once again, after leading the drivers’ championship for a few regattas.

Kim Link held on to her 1st place overall for another season, besting Sandi by 15 points after 20 regattas / 160 races.

Series 6 Totals

Our official races are now on hiatus, likely until January, when we’ll begin Series Seven!

Until then, we’ll continue to meet every Wednesday and Sunday at 2pm Pacific (5pm Eastern) for practise races. During the off-season we do a bit of experimentation with the boats, the format, the course.

See you all at the hydrodrome!

Season Six: Sunday September 13th

Posted by Atashi at 2015.09.05 12.13 in News

Our sixth season of racing will begin on Sunday September 13th.

As with past seasons, there will be a total of twenty regattas, taking place every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon at 2:00pm Pacific (5:00pm Eastern).

This season brings a few more changes to the formatting.

We are keeping the 8-races per regatta, but changing up the types of races. There will be five 5-Lap races, which will be a mix of Limited and Unlimited. The actual breakdown will depend on participants — more newcomers will mean more Limited races.

Generally though, we’re looking for something like this:

  1. 5 Lap Limited Race
  2. 5 Lap Limited Race
  3. 5 Lap Unlimited Race
  4. 5 Lap Unlimited Race
  5. 5 Lap Unlimited Race
  6. 10 Lap Unlimited Race
  7. 10 Lap Unlimited Race
  8. 20 Lap Unlimited Race

Limited races are those where Turbo is disabled and the boats are all locked to Manoevering mode.

In the Unlimited races, Turbo is available and the boats may  use both Manoevering and Speed modes.

The other significant change, is we’re going to use a ‘qualifying’ session prior to the first race, then have assigned starting positions for all 8 races. This is a bit complicated to explain, so bear with us:

  • The qualfying round is Open Qualifying, so everyone is on the track trying to set a good time. Qualifying will last 5 minutes or so.
  • After qualifying, the gates will be assigned with fastest person in gate 1, then moving backward from there so the slowest qualifying time is in the last gate.
  • After each race, your starting-gate for the next race is based on your position in the preceeding race — BUT assigned in reverse. So whomever finished race 1 in last place, starts race 2 in gate 1.

The gates will have the drivers’ name visible over them in hovertext, and the gate positions will be announced in chat; the whole thing is automated and hopefully people wil pay attention.

So come over to the Waikiti Wharf, grab a boat, and join us for some exciting boat races!
